Phytoremediation Approach
Selected plants for the streetscape, such as Salix nigra (Black Willow) and Phytolacca americana (American Pokeweed) are known to phytoremediate oil and diesel, meaning that their natural processes help to convert pollutants into a less noxious form. The phytoremediated greenspace’s selected plants target pollutants commonly found from contamination via coke ovens, which were once present on the site. Yellow (above, right) marks a portion of the contamination zone identified within the greenspace by the Preliminary Land Development Plan.
