Located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Hazelwood is a river town rich in history. During the mid 1900s, Hazelwood was at the heart of an industrial boom. Shortly after, the steel industry began a rapid decline. When Hazelwood Coke Works closed in 1998, 700 workers were laid off and people began to move out of the area. Hazelwood sits conveniently outside of downtown Pittsburgh and is a quiet escape from the city scene.
The concept behind the design is a hard, dense center with a soft, vegetated edge. The site is a brownfield so the concept is based off of accepted and disturbing elements. The proposed site design has an industrial appearance with natural elements to mitigate any issues in the contaminated area on the site.
