Spring 2
20th February 2023
Internet Safety Workshop
As part of the workshop, we described how to behave online in ways that do not upset others. We described ways that people can be kind online.Â
We then made a poster to remind ourselves, and others, how to stay safe online.
The Internet Owl showed us how to be kind online.
We learnt that it is important to be kind and polite online.

This half-term, Year 1 will be using technology to create media.Â
Lesson 1: How can we paint using computers?
This week, Wren class practised making marks on a screen using a freehand painting app. They used paint tools to draw a picture, they shared their experience and discussed the tools used.
You can have a go at home! https://paintz.app/
We are growing more confident using the trackpad.
We explored all the tools to find out what is possible.
We helped each other.
We are determined to succeed!

Lesson 2: Using shapes and lines.
This week, the children were learning how to use the shape and line tools on their painting app.
They picked the best painting tools to help them recreate the work of the artist, Piet Mondrian.Â
Piet Mondrian
Artist
Lived 1872 - 1944
Created abstract art
First, we had to draw a square.Â
Then, we added some vertical and horizontal lines to our square.
Finally, we filled in some of the blocks using primary colours.
What fantastic abstract art we created!
Red squares!
We used the three primary colours: red, yellow and blue.
We selected the tools that would be the most helpful.
It's STEM week!
We began STEM week, by discussing what a scientist does and what they think a scientist looks like. They were given ten minutes to draw a quick picture of a scientist. A lot of the children represented their scientist as being male and wearing a lab coat. We then looked deeper into the subject and discovered that not all scientists wear lab coats, and not all scientists are men!Â
Marine Biologist
We read a book called Shark Lady. The true story of how Eugenie Clark became the oceans most fearless scientist.
Eugenie Clark was a marine biologist. Wren class learnt about, and discussed the struggles that Eugenie Clark faced when trying to establish herself as a respected scientist. Like her, they created their own research journals. They used a variety of sources to find their information.
We created our own research journals in the form of zig zag books.
What will happen to Skittles if we pour warm water over them?
