I am truly grateful for the incredible opportunity provided by the SEA Teacher Program, which has been an invaluable experience in my journey as a future educator. The program has offered me the chance to grow both personally and professionally while gaining insights into education systems abroad. However, I believe there are areas for improvement that could enhance the program further.
Firstly, the timing of the program is an important consideration. Unfortunately, my batch coincided with the typhoon season in the Philippines, which brought weather challenges that impacted some activities. It would be beneficial if future SEA Teacher programs are scheduled during months with minimal risks of extreme weather to ensure smoother implementation. Additionally, the choice of partner institutions significantly affects the success of the program.
Another aspect to consider is the alignment of teaching placements with the participants’ fields of study. As a Special Education major, I was assigned to teach Kindergarten students. While this experience was rewarding, especially with the presence of a child with special needs in the class, I feel that being placed in a Special Education school, a therapy center, or an inclusive school would have provided more relevant learning opportunities aligned with my specialization. If such schools or facilities are not available in the lab schools of the partner institutions, I recommend that SEAMEO establish partnerships with local Special Education schools, therapy centers, or government-supported facilities for children with special needs. This initiative would maximize the relevance and impact of the experience for Special Education participants.
Overall, I extend my deepest gratitude to SEAMEO for organizing this program, which has given me remarkable experiences and opportunities for growth. With a few adjustments, I believe the SEA Teacher Program can become an even more impactful and enriching platform for aspiring educators. Thank you for this transformative experience!
