Teaching Experience in SEA Teacher Project Batch 10: Exploring "Is" and "Are" with Filipino Kindergarten Students
Participating in the SEA Teacher Project Batch 10 was an unforgettable experience, especially when I had the chance to teach Kindergarten 2 students in the University of Northen Philippines Labschool. I taught an English lesson on the use of "is" and "are", including the concepts of singular and plural, in a classroom filled with enthusiasm and joy.
The lesson focused on four main objectives:
Identifying when to use "is" or "are".
Creating simple sentences using "is" and "are" correctly.
Sharing the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables.
Actively participating in class discussions and activities.
To make the learning process engaging and age-appropriate, I utilized a variety of creative materials. Using puppet sticks, I narrated a story about a visit to the market, highlighting the use of "is" and "are" with examples like "This is an apple" and "These are bananas." The students also enjoyed the riddle cards, where they guessed the initial letters of words I presented while practicing "is" and "are" in simple sentences.
The shelf displays featuring real fruits and vegetables helped the students grasp the concept of singular and plural more effectively. I also incorporated baskets in an interactive activity, where students sorted fruits or vegetables and used "is" or "are" in sentences accordingly. As a reward, those who completed the tasks successfully received medal replicas, which boosted their motivation and made the learning experience more enjoyable.
Through these methods, I observed that the students were highly enthusiastic, actively answering questions, and showing significant improvement in understanding the lesson. This experience not only enhanced my teaching skills but also taught me the importance of using creative and interactive approaches to make learning both fun and effective. Teaching in the SEA Teacher Project was a transformative journey that has inspired me to become a better educator in the future.
