“No Comment.” This is what 38-year Medina teacher Mr. Jack had to say when approached with the question of his opinion on masks for students this year.
The controversy over masks within school has created constant tension between people. The current rule of masks in Medina City Schools is that they are optional to students but highly recommended. We took the time to interview four Medina High School teachers to get their very brief opinions on the matter, all of which except for Mr. Jack, a seasoned history teacher here, had something to say.
Mr. Mohn stated, “Students should wear masks,” seeming to agree with the common consensus.
Other teachers here such as Ms. Risch, a spirited math teacher stated, “I want kids in class, and masks get kids in class, so they should be worn.” Her statement provides her reasoning behind her support of masks, which is to keep students in school. She is opposed to the online counterpart, which seems to be very unpopular according to various conversations with students and staff.
Some students wear masks for their own personal safety whereas others are simply fearful of being quarantined.
Then we stopped by Ms. Shipley’s room, a new teacher in the math department here at Medina, she stated that, “Masks should be worn to keep students safe”. She addresses the safety factor which is one of the main reasons students wear masks to school.
Teachers here at Medina care about their students and only want the best for them. According to the statements received and the various other conversations that were had, everyone just wants the best for their peers. Some students are still without masks at school and they believe that they are not at any health risk or that they simply do not want to wear a mask to school.
No matter if you wear a mask or not to school, it is your personal decision as to what you do for yourself. Rather than arguing with each other, we need to respect each other and the decisions of others, everyone has responsibility for themselves. Although masks have caused us to be divided in some ways, we are still one school, and we’re all striving towards the same goal, but no matter what decisions we make, it is certain that nobody can do this on their own.
