In July, over 300,600 people were unemployed in Ohio according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There has been lots of talk about this topic recently around Media and MHS. Many students are in search of jobs. Whether it's to get involved around the community, or to make some extra money, there are many jobs available around the city, one could be the perfect fit for you!
What do the Bees say?
Abbigail Wagner works at courthouse pizza on the square. She says the reason why she got a job is “to make money and meet new people ''. Abbi would recommend her job to others because she loves “getting to talk to friends” and “taking home free pizza.” She says the only downside of her job is working alone in the office because “there is on one to talk to.” When asking Abbi “If you could work at any place you wanted, where would it be?΅ she responded saying she would keep her job. The last thing Abbi mentioned is that not everyone at MHS should be forced to have a job. “Some people play sports, or do clubs that they need to prioritize.”
Ella DiCola also has a job. She feels “it is a good experience for the future, and it is nice to have some cash.” Ella would recommend a job to anyone who had the time because “it is what we will be doing the rest of our lives so it is a good thing to get an idea of the workforce now.” If Ella could work anywhere, she would choose somewhere on the square “because all of the shops feel homey there”. Lastly, Ella thinks that students should only work if they want to, but if so the age 15-16 is a good time to start.
Based on these, and other student communication, MHS is very busy working and looking for jobs around Medina. The square is a popular spot for jobs at MHS, however there are very many openings around the city. Concluding from students' perspectives, it's important to balance your time before getting a job, and pick something you would enjoy or grow from.
What are employers looking for in employees? John, the store manager at Staples here in Medina said that they are looking for employees that are “dependable and professional”. When asked what his favorite part of his job was, he stated that he “enjoys working with the different people he meets everyday from his employees to the customers”. Aderienne from Home Depot said they are looking for “students that are friendly and willing to work and help others”. She also said that her favorite part of the job is “working with the public”.
