What is the writing studio all about?
Essays are common assignments in language arts classes. Many students struggle with writing and can’t find the essential help needed to make their essays the best it can be. That’s where the writing studio comes into play. The writing studio was created to help students with any type of writing, whether it be essays, projects, or grammar.
The writing studio is located in the back of the media center and open Tuesdays and Thursdays during school hours. “Students are welcome to the studio to get help on any sort of writing,” stated Frankie Frost, a junior and a volunteer writing fellow. Juniors and seniors can volunteer to tutor people needing extra help. Volunteering to be a peer tutor is not available for underclassmen yet.
The maximum number of people allowed in the writing studio is ten per period. This means two people from each study hall. One thing nice about the writing studio is it’s not competitive. There are no leadership positions and it’s not a club. You can come simply to enjoy working on an assignment and collaborating with others.
We asked Mrs. Doerge what some limitations were to the writing studio, and what obstacles come with this studio? Mrs. Doerge said, “The writing studio is a new space, so we just need to get the word out there so people know what we’re about.” The teachers and students volunteering are willing to help anyone with anything on their essays.
Zoey Dressler is a student at Medina High School who uses the writing studio to her advantage. When asked about why she uses the writing studio instead of working at home, Dressler said, “I ended up using the writing studio because I was having trouble with an essay I was writing and wanted opinions from other people. If I worked on it from home I wouldn't have gotten that extra help I needed.”
Dressler thinks that people can benefit from the writing studio because “All the students were really nice and I was able to get advice I needed. It was the last day in class to work on my essay so I couldn’t get help from the teacher. Having the studio to fall back on was helpful. ”
When asked about why it’s important for students to know about the writing studio, Dressler responded, “Many students would benefit from someone reading what they wrote. If you are having trouble with your writing it’s a great place for advice from teachers and other students. Overall it’s been helpful to me and I think it would benefit others as well!”
The writing studio is willing to help you with work as soon as you step into the doors. You can always count on the writing studio to be stocked with candy when you go for additional help!
