Can Electric Cars Keep Up?
By: Evan Block
Electric cars have become a huge concern for people and businesses throughout the world. From very expensive lithium battery prices to the problem of converting roads to all-electric vehicles. As cool as electric cars may be, manufacturers need to make them more affordable so they can compete with gas cars. Gas cars have been a huge part of American culture since the first car was created. Not only are people around the world more attached to gas cars, but believe they’re more efficient than electric cars will ever be.
An affordable car in today’s age is almost unheard of in the market. On top of that, rates for electric motors are higher than they have ever been. For a whole ton of batteries to be produced, it can cost manufacturers up to 5,000-8,000 dollars depending on where it’s made. Profit margins for batteries is about 10 times what it costs to extract. Even with a decline in prices, every so often, battery are still too expensive. This creates a hold in sales for electric cars, and can’t be sold.
In addition, people were impressed with the idea of converting to electric motors. People loved that pollution has a chance to decrease with the conversion to electric cars. Although It could take years for pollution numbers to drop significantly, supporters of the idea will feel like the goal has been reached. What they don’t realize is just making the batteries for motors can cause more pollution than making one gas vehicle.
Although batteries may be expensive, auto sales are still able to keep up with the higher rates so far. Neal E. Boudette says in his New York Times article that “Automakers have mostly overcome supply-chain challenges that upended production early in the pandemic”. Since the start of crazy prices, rates have been through the roof. It is almost unheard of to be able to be under 6% financing. The good news is general motors released that sales have increased substantially in the first three months of 2023.

~ All Makes Detailing
With good comes bad. Electric cars don’t even compare with MPG to gas cars. On one battery, you can see yourself going about 300-350 miles before stopping to charge. You can expect to be there anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour charging your vehicle. A gas car, on average can go up to 400-450 miles on one tank. A fill-up takes anywhere between 2-5 minutes then you’re and your way again. If manufacturers make their batteries more powerful, electric cars will definitely be more competitive with gas cars. Changes need to take place right away to guarantee more sales.
