Many of us have gone to public school our whole lives without a single class about Christianity or what it means to be a Christian. There were no courses to help us fully understand the Bible and deepen our faith. Everyone has heard teachers say they aren’t allowed to teach religion in public schools and have questioned why. Not having a place for Christians to learn can make them feel unsupported and overlooked. Public schools should be allowed to have Christian classes for those who choose to take them.
There are many Christians who attend public schools and feel it’s important to practice their faith during the school day. Pew Research Center said, “Four in ten teens who attend public school think it is appropriate for a teacher to lead a class in prayer.” Teachers at a Florida public school were told they could “Pray in private settings” according to a New York Times article. Not allowing teachers to pray in front of students who are Christians will have a negative impact on the students who try to practice and pray every day. With Biblical classes, Christian students and teachers can learn how to deepen their faith and evangelize with others
Christianity is the most common religion in public schools. In the article “Respecting all Faiths in our Public Schools,” it is important for teachers, coaches, and other students to respect Christians who pray before class or even before sporting events. Christians need to have mentors and other students who believe and practice the same way they do. If we had Bible classes in public schools then people who are Christians or people who are interested would sign up and take the courses. No one has to sign up for the classes if they do not want to.
People who disagree with this claim might say “Public schools are perfectly fine the way they are now, don’t change anything,” or say, “Just go to a private school.” Not everyone can afford to go to a private school because of how much it costs, and schools now need to support Christians who want change in the schools. If classes were in public schools, Christians would benefit individually and spiritually.
Christians feel unsupported when they come to school because they can’t relate or talk to anyone about biblical topics. Students in public schools can advocate this issue in the student council while also bringing the issue up to parents so they can be more aware, too. If there was a class where people could talk, relate, and discuss ideas with each other, then Christians would have a better understanding of what the Bible is trying to say and have a deeper faith.
