If you love mysteries and all things to do with suspense, “When” by Victoria Laurie is the book for you. With supernatural phenomena and events that will have you on the edge of your seat, I guarantee you will read until the end.
Maddie Fynn was born able to see death dates. Outside of New York City in a little suburb, Maddie doesn’t know why this burden has landed on her. She wishes she couldn’t see other dates.
She found out she could see death dates when she drew a picture of her mom, dad, and herself on a piece of paper. She had written numbers above her mom and dad’s head and later her mom figured out she had written down death dates after her dad died on the exact date.
Ever since Maddie’s dad died, her mom drinks to cope with him being gone. To make enough money for food and to pay off bills, Maddie’s mom has Maddie do readings for people telling them their death dates.
Many clients get mad at her when the date is given, specifically a mother who came to find out her daughter's date. She wanted to see if she would make it through the experimental drug trial while unintentionally getting told her son's death date is too.
Maddie wants to help so badly and prevent everyone she sees from dying on their death date but she can’t. She can only see the day they die and nothing more.
One week after the reading the son died on the predicted date, and the mother turns to Maddie. After this death, more deaths keep happening and people are starting to question if maybe Maddie has something to do with the deaths.
“When” was engaging and had all of the right elements of a good mystery book, such as suspense, thrill, and action-packed events. The writing style is in 1st person. “Your Mom’s sick, she has a disease, and she needs help.” (199). This quote hit me hard because this kind of thing happens to people and it makes me sad thinking about what others go through.
This book has events that could be a trigger for some people. The book has 323 pages in it which is a good amount for a quick read. If you are a fast reader you could definitely finish this book in a few weeks.
“When” has adventure and suspense. There are things in this book I know other people go through and can relate to. That's why this book targets more older teens. A mystery that has an unexpected ending and something you can relate to will make you want to read “When” until the end.
