Teachers and the Education System
By Anthony Hamilton
Teachers are a very important aspect of our education and they don’t receive enough recognition. Teachers should be paid more as they put in so much work and are at the center of our education system. There are many problems with our education system today such as the performance of students and the inability to recruit enough qualified college graduates into the teaching profession. The education system needs to make changes and that should start with teachers.
Problems within our education system include a lack of trained and able substitutes to fill teacher shortages, unequal access to educational resources, and inadequate funding for schools. Teachers aren’t respected enough and may feel demotivated to put in the most of their potential when they aren’t being paid enough. Raising teacher salaries would make the job more attractive which could motivate teachers to work harder and would lead to better student performance. Teachers won’t have to work side jobs and can better provide for their families with increased pay. Teachers are very important in the education system and shape our future generations.
On the other side, some argue that a salary increase costs more and that there’s no guarantee teachers would work harder if they were paid more. Teachers may feel they won’t need to put in as much effort if they were paid more. If teacher salaries were raised too high, it could draw people in that aren’t even passionate about teaching and are only joining the profession for financial benefit. While it’s possible that raising teacher salaries might not entirely resolve the issues relating to improved education outcomes, it’s still an important step in addressing one major obstacle; attracting and retaining highly qualified educators necessary for sustainable education reform efforts.
The salary is one of the main factors affecting teacher retention. Many teachers are overworked and underpaid leading to burnout and ultimately leaving the job as a whole. There needs to be ways to work around this issue so teachers can be motivated to stay in their positions longer. Obviously, teacher salaries can be raised but it’s not the ideal solution for every school district. Alternative solutions could include bonuses or stipends for obtaining certain certifications or degrees, opportunities for developing professionally or roles as a leader within the school community, and better healthcare benefits.
Whether solving the issue entirely or not, focusing on the issues within our education system is a step in the right direction. “Investing in teachers is investing in the future. Teachers are the backbone of the education system and play a critical role in shaping the minds of future generations. By investing in teachers, we’re investing in children and our future.”
