“The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green is a romance novel intended towards young adults. It follows the journey of Hazel Grace, 16, who has been diagnosed with stage IV thyroid cancer at age 13 and is trying to figure out her place in life.
Hazel is depressed and hasn’t attended traditional school since she was diagnosed. Her mother sends her to a support group, which she is reluctant to go to, but soon finds it would change her life as she meets Augustus Waters, a sick but handsome boy. Green’s novel is written complexly but also very easy to understand at the same time. He is able to mix emotions very well in this book that provides a catharsis experience.
This book lets us see the world from a different perspective and shows us how people with diseases such as cancer live their life. Hazel experiences the adventure of a lifetime as she ponders life and how she will leave an impact after death. “I’m a grenade,” I said again. “I just want to stay away from people and read books and think.”
This book is very engaging. I’ve loved watching Hazel and Augustus develop their relationship throughout their journey in the book. Hazel changes throughout the book in her personality and learns how she can live the best life as a dying cancer patient. She is conflicted with living her life and how her parents will live their lives once she dies.
“There will come a time when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human beings remaining to remember that anyone ever existed or that our species ever did anything. There will be no one left to remember Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. Everything that we did and built and wrote and thought and discovered will be forgotten and all of this will have been for naught. Maybe that time is coming soon and maybe it is millions of years away, but even if we survive the collapse of our sun, we will not survive forever.”
Hazel and Augustus have very different opinions on the afterlife and that is shown a lot throughout the book.
This book is incredible. You can tell Green has a lot of knowledge about the topic of this book and really wanted to spread a message to the readers. I would definitely recommend giving this book a read. It’s very powerful and may change your view on life.
