LIV Golf Dispute
By: Michael Warnement
LIV Golf is now in control! The LIV Golf League, financed by Saudi Arabia's state wealth fund, bills itself as "an opportunity to revitalize golf" with massive incentives, top players, and slick marketing. LIV Golf's organizers hope to position the league as a player-power-focused competitor to the PGA Tour, which has been the pinnacle of professional golf for over a century. “The “LIV'' in LIV Golf isn’t an acronym. Rather, it stands for the Roman numeral of 54 for the number of holes each tournament will be, and the score a golfer would have if they birdied every hole on a par-72 course” (NBC). By giving PGA Tour players millions of dollars to play for LIV, the LIV Golf League inadvertently interfered with their contracts.
LIV Golf is a mystery to the PGA Tour since it broke the Tour's contracts. A New York Times piece goes into depth about what transpired. “In its counterclaim, the PGA Tour, which LIV is suing for antitrust violations, said the upstart series had ‘tortiously interfered’ with the tour’s contracts with golfers who had left to join LIV. It added that LIV had ‘falsely informed’ its players that they could break their contracts with the tour ‘for the benefit of LIV and to the detriment of all tour members.’”. (NYTimes). The article proves how LIV Golf broke PGA Tour players' contracts. In addition to violating Tour contracts, LIV Golf removed important PGA Tour players.
By plucking important players from both the PGA Tour and the European Tour, LIV Golf has broken relationships with players worldwide. Going into The Masters 2023, there has been speculation about what the champion's supper would include, especially given the presence of LIV Golf players. Over the past year, “There have already been heated public exchanges between the players. And while some players downplay the interaction at the dinner, others say it’s impossible to ignore the rift” (author last nameNY Times). This demonstrates how LIV Golf is destroying relationships between players. We can fight the LIV Golf League by not supporting it, not watching it, and advocating for the PGA Tour and European Tour. It is unjust that they must forego lifelong connections because of the Saudi-backed league.
Although the LIV Golf League has taken some of the best players, the up-and-coming stars have taken the advantage. “....the impact of more than 20 former Tour players who are now playing on the LIV Golf League and are under suspension from the PGA Tour will be felt at the Genesis” (Jacksonville). With some major names absent from the Genesis, newer players have a better chance of winning. The LIV Golf League is paving the road for younger golfers to compete on the PGA Tour.
