The meeting took place in Alaquàs (Spain) from November 18th to the 24th and focussed on the topic "WATER, A SCARCE RESOURCE"

FINAL SCHEDULE - Documents de Google.pdf

Schedule of the meeting

The goal of the meeting was to offer an approach to all the dimensions of  WATER as a natural resource. Not only focused on how to make sustainable use of water but also trying to show the key role of water ecosystems as wetlands.

Lecture: "Aquaculture, a sustainable option to avoid overuse of fisheries"

Silvia Martínez Llorens and David Sánchez Peñaranda, both members of the Animal Science Department of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, gave us a lecture about Aquaculture and its role as an alternative to fisheries and the protection of the marine ecosystem.

They show us the different methods and their pros and cons regarding the environment.

ALBUFERA DE VALENCIA NATURAL PARK - ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WETLAND IN SPAIN

We visited Albufera Natural Park and the guide explained to us its importance as a wetland and a ZEPA zone (bird protection area), and its traditional use as rice fields. They also explained to us the problems of Eutrophication due to the abusive use of fertilizers

Audio-guia-English.pdf

We were able to access some interesting resources to work with the students about Albufera Natural Park for example this audioguide

VISIT TO VALENCIA AQUARIUM (SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT)

OCEANOGRAFIC of Valencia is one of the most important aquariums in the world. We visited it, but especially the "guts" of the Aquarium: its facilities, and the different areas (hospital, quarantine area, research offices. A guide explained to us how they work, which kind of programs they have to work with students, the relevance of the marine ecosystems, and how they collaborate with different programs related to turtles' recovery and reintroduction to the sea. Really interesting!!!

ASSESSING FRESHWATER QUALITY USING  MACROINVERTEBRATES - LIMNÉ FOUNDATION / DESALINATION PLANT OF SAGUNT

Limne Foundation is a relevant institution in the field of river protection. They manage a huge group of volunteers working on different projects. We were initiated on how we can assess freshwater quality using macroinvertebrates as biomarkers.

The desalination plant of Sagunt provides fresh water to a huge area and some industries. We were shown the facilities of the plant and were explained how they transform seawater into fresh water using membrane filters.

CLIMATE CHANGE STUDY CENTER OF VALENCIA - TANCAT DE LA PIPA NATURAL PROTECTION AREA

What could happen if we don't stop climate change? How are we contributing to this process? How can we reduce our carbon footprint? These are only some of the reflections that this center suggests to the visitors (students and teachers).

Tancat de la Pipa is an area inside Albufera Natural Park where they are studying how green filters can contribute to clean polluted water. They also offer visits to schools to show them the relevance of this area and its value as a high biodiversity ecosystem.
