The Symphonic Orchestra is an advanced-level music class open to string, woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians in grades 10-12. In addition to Walter Johnson's winter and spring concerts, this ensemble represents Walter Johnson High School at the MCPS High School Orchestra Adjudication Festival. Interested students must submit a placement recording after completing Concert Band, Concert Orchestra, or an equivalent high school level course in order to enroll for this class.
Official Course Description -- Symphonic Orchestra A/B (ART2099)

Students develop skills that will enable them to perform music at the Grade IV to VI level of difficulty. The emphasis will be on the study of literature composed for string and/or full orchestras dating back to the 12th century, and up through the present day. Additional experiences may include athletic bands, solo/chamber and musical theatre performance opportunities. In addition to performing music, creating and responding activities are included. Public performances during and after school may be required to meet course objectives.
Prerequisite: Concert Orchestra or by audition, and the need to balance instrumentation as determined by the director

This is an Advanced-Level (AL) course which counts towards the MCPS Certificate of Merit (CM)
