A course for the most dedicated of music students, AP Music Theory provides a strong foundation for music study and participation post-high school. The course culminates the College Board AP Music Theory and Composition Exam in May, which requires strong skills in aural and visual music cognition and composition, and the ability to sing at sight; all skills which are discussed and developed over the course of the year.

Students with strong interest and preparation in music prepare to meet the College Board AP Music Theory and Composition Exam requirements. Practice in sight-singing, dictation, and composition is complemented by listening and score analysis. Throughout the year, students read, write, and analyze music of increasing complexity. They study in detail the techniques used to compose music.
Prerequisite: At least 1 year of a prior music class is required OR permission of instructor
Grade Level: 11 - 12
This is an Advanced-Level (AL) course which counts towards the MCPS Certificate of Merit (CM). As an Advanced Placement (AP) course, the course culminates in an AP exam in May, which could earn the student college credit. This course counts for the MCPS Fine Arts Credit graduation requirement.
