The difference between a job, volunteer position, and internship is partnership with the school. For a job or volunteer position to count as an internship, your supervisor must be willing to fulfill the employer responsibilities. A brief overview of these responsibilities include sharing a quarterly evaluation with the school, verifying student submitted hours, and being open to host the internship teacher for site visits or check in calls. A full description of these responsibilities that could be shared with a potential new internship site is available here.
An internship takes place out of school at a work site. Students who are in the MCPS Internship Academy do an internship and are enrolled in the Internship Academy course. At B-CC, Internship Preparation Academy starts in the spring semester of the previous year, when interested students attend lunchtime seminars to learn about the job search process. When school starts in the fall, the class meets every day for the first two weeks of school and every other Monday thereafter. Triple period interns are in the 6th period seminar, double period interns are in the 6th period seminar, and single period interns are in the 7th period seminar. Students attend the seminar during the assigned period and day. The other days, the students leave school to go to work.
We have many fabulous sponsors who are willing to host students year after year. Students are also able and encouraged to research and look for new sites. Generally, the harder a student looks for an internship, the more they enjoy the internship.
Yes, as long as you create a plan with your employer to complete the required number of hours. Ideally, students work a set number of hours each week, but if a student can find a sponsor who is willing to offer some flexibility, they may work fewer hours during the sports season and more hours after it ends. Please also be advised that if you need to be back at school for an after school activity, it is going to limit your options. It’s difficult to get the perfect internship at the perfect time and in the perfect location. You may need to make some trade-offs.
No. However, there is a large amount of support offered in the Spring to help you find a placement. See the find an internship page for more information.
Ideally, students go to work each day. However, some students, particularly those who travel long distances to get to their internship, find that it is easier to work several longer shifts each week to save on travel time. Some sites also prefer to have students work for several longer stretches of time. Therefore, each intern may coordinate with his/her sponsor to develop a set schedule and to communicate that schedule with the coordinator.
Students provide their own transportation to and from the work site. Some drive, but others walk, bike, take Metro or ride the bus.
Yes, class will meet once per week on a designated day. In the 2025-2026 school year this day is Wednesday, this will be determined for the 2026-2027 school year by May 2026.
B-CC does not host the summer internship program, it is called Summer Rise and is run by MCPS Central Office. More information here.
The required hours are per semester. This equates to roughly 4-5 months of time at your internship.
No. On the days that the internship class does not meet, you are released from school and there is no designated location to be.
As long as you are following Maryland child labor laws, yes. If it works with your schedule, you can work on weekends and days that school is not in session.
A lucky few internships are paid, but most internships are not. You are paid in school credit, plus the benefits of networking and experience.
Yes. Before switching, you should work with the internship teacher and site supervisor to see if a change in working conditions could improve your experience. If this is not successful, you can switch internships. However, it is strongly recommended to wait until you have a new internship lined up before stopping your current internship to eliminate the risk of not meeting your required hours

You enter all of your own hours within the Navigator platform. Each quarter, there are 5x timecard checks to ensure you are entering hours and on track to successfully complete your internship.
