All cultural dance forms have been created and developed in a particular context.
You will select a cultural dance form from the following list*.
BUTOH KATHAK BOLLYWOOD BALLROOM DANCING
FLAMENCO IRISH DANCING SALSA SWING Chinese LONG SLEEVE DANCE
*If you are interested in researching and presenting another form that is not on this list, you will need to have it approved by Ms Angell
Either working individually or in pairs, you need to prepare a 5 minute oral presentation of your chosen dance style.
You need to find and present information about the following:
- Where and when did this dance originate or emerge?
- Did any historical events impact or influence this dance? (Was it created in response to anything that was happening at the time?)
- Does this dance have a purpose for its community? Eg. does it tell an important story or connect people to a particular place or object?
- Who are the key dancers OR the key choreographers/companies, associated with this style. Look for people who were important to how the dance began AND people who have developed the style or are famous for performing it now.
- What are some of the main steps/gestures the style is known for?
- How is this dance performed? Explain any production elements that are important in this form - eg. costumes, make-up, the type of theatre/space this dance form was performed/is performed in.
YOUR REPORT MUST INCLUDE:
- At least 5 images/videos to accompany your presentation - you can choose whether to do a powerpoint or show hard copy images. Video content should be limited to 30 seconds - 1 minute.
- A teaching moment - you will teach the class 2-3 of the key steps and/or gestures, and/or a phrase of movement. It is important that everyone participates in this section, so plan how you will get everyone up and moving, and ensure you think about how to teach the movement with clear instructions. We will practice this part before the final presentation!
- A reference list of all books, websites and resources you have used.
All images must be credited by listing the URL or source.
Plagiarism, or any ‘’cut and paste’” submissions, will result in a request to re-submit and potential an ungraded result.
