You will be assessed across three main LEARNING TASKS:
After learning and exploring the beginnings of dance, and the historical contexts that have lead to particular styles, you will do you own research into a particular cultural dance style (eg. Indigenous Dance, Kathak, Chinese Long Sleeve Dance). You will work alone or in a pair, and prepare and present your research in a 8-10 minute presentation that must include demonstration or teaching of a short movement phrase.
Throughout the semester you will learn and practice using anatomy and physiology terminology and dance language that you can use to describe movement across all styles of dance. You will then investigate some of the common injuries and hazards for dancers, and whether these injuries are related to particular styles of dance. You will participate in mini lessons in Pilates, Conditioning and Strength. You will then prepare a preventative care plan for dancers, targeting to a particular dance style of your choice.
In Term 2 our focus will be learning and creating choreography. You will collaborate in the creation of a new dance work as a class, as well as creating your own choreographed works in small groups. These works will be presented in a performance towards the end of Term 2 (time and venue tbc). Through your participation in the development and performance of these works, you will demonstrate your understanding of choreographic processes and forms, as well as your proficiency in a variety of dance styles.
