Bridges are structures built to span obstacles. Bridges must be stable and strong enough to support their own weight in addition to the weight of people, vehicles, and animals passing over them. Strong winds, freezing and thawing, and other environmental factors can also erode the structure of a bridge over time.
Building a bridge is a good exercise in engineering because of the elemental problems they pose. The 5th and 6th grade IPLC classes built bridges completely out of straws that had to span a gap of 50 cm. The bridges had to be wide enough and strong enough for a Sphero robot to drive across. The bridges were very diverse in size and structure. Each team tested their bridge over a river of water - the results were excellent!
