Mrs. Heyerdahl's fourth graders were learning about landforms as the 2018 Winter Olympics were gearing up in South Korea. Noticing that many Olympic sport venues are landform based (mountains, lakes, etc.), we decided to apply our knowledge and get creative.
Students were tasked to create a new Olympic sport that is performed on a specific landform. The project involved brainstorming, designing, and constructing a model of the sport. Students also wrote a paragraph describing the sport and researched a country that would be able to host an Olympic games that included the sport due to the appropriate geography. Finally, students put together a short presentation to introduce their new sport.
