Program Philosophy
Wrestling is a sport that requires more than talent. It takes physical and mental discipline as well as sound fundamentals. A Matawan wrestler should work relentlessly to maximize his/her potential in all of these areas. Although this staff teaches specific technical components of this sport, it is our belief that there is more than one way to wrestle. We work tirelessly to bring in an array of techniques, giving each individual the best chance at personal success. There is however one area of wrestling that we believe is absolute. A Matawan wrestler must be a hard worker who strives to be in the best physical shape possible. We believe in the adage, “hard work beats talents, when talent doesn’t work hard.” Our expectations of our wrestlers are that they will out work their opponent each and every day. Our objective is to wear our opponent down so that we can physically break them. The third period should be our best, as our opponent is fatigued and we are able to remain fundamentally sound due to superior conditioning.
Benefits of the Program
Mental toughness - The sport requires athletes to be incredibly focused. This enables them to react quickly and perform calculated movements. With an emphasis on presence, many wrestlers find themselves developing a sharper mind.
Full Body Workout - Wrestling allows you to embrace a full-body workout and incorporate every muscle group in any given session. Rather than pumping out legs and chest on repeat, you can experience a well-rounded workout with every practice.
Football benefits - A double leg takedown is just a football tackle. A wrestling stance is just being lower than your opponent which will make playing football a lot easier.
