The 2020 baseball season was cut short after the first week of pre-season practice due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Little did we know at the time, but that would be the last time this group stepped out on the field together. It was going to be a season that held a lot of promise. The Huskies were a team with lots of upperclassmen experience who were poised to make so noise in the B-North Division and Shore Conference. Unfortunately, they never got that chance.
Fortunately, New Jersey was able to lower the Covid numbers and Governor Murphy re-opened the ball fields in July. The Huskies participated as a town team coached by alumni Mike Pallitto (class of '93), Cory Nusbaum (class of '14) and Adam Elliott (class of '16) in The Last Dance baseball tournament with teams from all over the state of New Jersey competing. It would be the last opportunity for seniors across the state--including our 10 Huskies--to give it one last shot playing for their HS team. In the first game, the Huskies upset the top seeded Ocean Township team 7-3. They followed that with a 2-0 victory against Rumson-Fair Haven. This led to a matchup against Middletown South, who was ranked in the top 10 in the Shore, with a chance to go to the Round of 16 on the line. The Huskies led the whole way, before relinquishing the lead in the 7th and ultimately losing in extra innings. It was a memorable run and a brief glimpse into what could have been and amazing 2020 high school season.
Looking forward to 2021, the Huskies are continuing their hard work in the offseason, hoping for the opportunity to get back out on the field in the Spring and make some noise!
