Running event at the university - May 2024

Some Petrolabers got together in early May for a running event at the university. We did not got first price (and not event second place), but we are still the number one group at the university! Congrats to Ola and Vishal!

IGS Annual Meeting! - April 2024

Some of our students attended the Israel Geological Society Annual Meeting which took place at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Mfoniso presented results from his studies and his poster was well attended by peers and colleagues.

Congrats Mfoniso!

Social gathering (with food!)! - March 2024

We just gathered in Isfyia for eating (a lot) and laughing (even more)! It was really fun and we will do it again!

Fieldtrip in the Dead Sea - January 2024

We went for a fieldrip to the Dead Sea at the vicinity of Mount Sedom and Perazim creek. It was great!

This is part of Olaopa's thesis work. More to come. Congrats guys!

Fieldwork in Mount Sedom - May 2023

We went for doing fieldwork at the Mount Sedom site (well, not to wise to do it at over 40 degrees centigrade!). But, despite the heat and dry conditions, we successfully carry out an excellent fieldwork campaign in the Bnot Lot member of the Sedom Formation. This is part of Olaopa's thesis work. More to come.

Congrats guys!

Fieldwork in the Jordan valley - March 2023

We went for doing fieldwork in the Jordan Valley, exploring outcrops of the Lisan Formation (LGM, ancient Dead Sea). We mapped and did several columnar sections in exceptionally well-exposed sequences. We returned to Haifa with lots of rocks! Thanks to all the students who came for helping and giving a hand!

More to come!

Running at the University annual competition - Apr 2023

Every year, the University of Haifa is having an annual race for students and academic staff members (and actually, for everyone who wants to inscribe!). Even though it was already pretty warm, a nice delegation of PetroLab participated in the race. Congrats guys!

Congrats to Abdel-Aziz for receiving an excellence scholarship from INQUA - February 2023

Abdel-Aziz was selected from many students worldwide and was granted with the excellence scholarship from INQUA! The scholarship allowed Abdel-Aziz to travel to IGAG in Rome for half a year of analysis in ostracods and isotopes and the research was presented at the INQUA meeting in Rome. Congrats Abdel-Aziz!

Congrats to Avinesh and Paschal for their marriages!

Our students, Avinesh and Paschal, went back to their countries for their respective marriages. Unfortunately we were unable to physically be with them and join their weddings, but we shared our love with them virtually.

Congrats to both of you and we all members of the lab wish you many years of happiness!

group meetings (both virtual & frontal!) - Jan 2022

We continue our group meetings, frontal but also in zoom with members of the lab sitting abroad or in their comfortable homes. This time (middle June), we discussed an interesting paper merging politics and lake studies concerning the Caspian Sea.

Social group meeting (with beers and drinks!) - June 2021

Following this long year full of closures, pandemic and associated stresses, we decided to move out group meeting to a pub in central Haifa! We met at Nola Socks pub in Ziv neighborhood for beers and food and share good vibes! We are looking forwards to make such a similar group meeting again soon!

Dead Sea field trip! - May 2021

After long time waiting an delays due to the COVID pandemic, we went for a three day long field trip to the Dead Sea! We started the trip in Mount Sedom, visiting astonishing sites of global importance showing exceptional geology (diapirs, faulted rocks), passing through the world-class outcrops of the Pleistocene remains of Lake Lisan, and culminating in the major source of water inflow to the Dead Sea: the Jordan River. We learn not only about the Dead Sea itself, but about the processes occurring in a seep structural tectonic basin that can be used as analog for similar processes occurring in the deep marine environment.

Group meetings are back (via zoom...) - 2020/2021

The COVID-19 conditions and regulations associated with the pandemic have moved our group meetings to virtual! Late February we met online and Parth showed some advances from his PhD thesis and set the ground for an interesting discussion among the group members. Congrats Parth for the advancements!

New academic year - 2020/2021

A new academic year started and new students joined PetroLab! We decided to welcome them and profit of beautiful weather to go barbecuing at Carmel Park, next to the University of Haifa. We had great food, listened to good music and profited from good company!

Abdelaziz Yassine (from Chad), Winnie Bett (from Kenya) and Omer Alon (from Israel) joined the team for carrying out their respective MSc research theses. It was great fun to welcome you with a BBQ and hope it the first of many during the coming year!

Farewell party for some petrolabers!

We gathered on a warm summer day of late August 2019 to greet some of our Petrolabers on new paths and advances in their careers. Ioannis is leaving to Norway and getting married (CONGRATS!!!), while Or is leaving for half a year to Hamburg and soon is embarking on a scientific cruise to the Mascarene Plateau. Congrats both and we look forwards to receive news from you (and the BBQ was excellent!).

Petrolabers at the swimming pool!

We profited from another warm day in July 2019 and decided to leave the lab and routine work for jumping at the swimming pool at Kibbutz Alonim. We came with our spouses and kids and it was very fun. Important to mention that the watermelon was excellent and was eaten too fast, before we could even take a picture of it! We will definitively do this again profiting from the long Israeli summer!

Petrolabers on Carting

On a warm day of late June 2018, we gathered for competing on carting at the Haifa-Azrieli mall. It appears that some of us are not only good in writing papers, but also in speeding! It was fun and Nehemiah showed us how to win a carting competition at 100 km/h!

Sylvester 2017!

We went all (or most) petrolabers for welcoming 2018 with an excellent ice cream! It was fun and we look forwards for a great start for the new coming year! Cheers to everybody!

New Mezuzah at PetroLab!

On December 2017 we installed a new Mezuzah at PetroLab! Ido Tkacz leaded the event, guiding us with the necessary blessing. PetroLab is not only a hub for science, but a multicultural melting pot. Our students are from a wide-scale of faiths and backgrounds and as such we respect each member religious holidays, regardless of if the day in question is followed formally in Israel. Starting from Ramadan, through Chinese new years and Nairuz holidays, we believe that differences make us interesting and we learn from each other.

Another day at the lab (or post-work activities...)

Colleagues from NAMCOR (the National Petroleum Corp. of Namibia) came for a week of work at the lab on October 2017. The purpose was to measure petrophysical properties utilizing our scientific gear. We profited the opportunity and went for excellent beers at the Duke.

It was fun!

Scientific picnic

We profited the good weather and did a group picnic at the nearby Carmel forest on May 2017. We didn't stopped the science and had an excellent presentation of one of our colleagues. It was fun and very tasty!
