5Chestnut  Learning Update

Central Idea: People with different beliefs may struggle for rights and freedoms.

In maths, we have been consolidating the learning that we have been doing on addition and subtraction.  Some of the concepts we have been learning are: mental strategies, adding whole numbers with more than four digits and multi-step addition and subtraction problems.  The children have been thinking about the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction.  We have also participated in a national times tables competition this week which has been exciting, but also supported the children in identifying the tables which they may need some extra practise on!

For our Inquiry learning, we have thought deeper about human rights, as well as the concept that these rights can be infringed.  The children have researched organisations such as Amnesty International and UNICEF who carry out invaluable work in supporting rights and freedoms.

Our core text this module, The Boy at the Back of the Class, tells the story of a Syrian refugee child.  The children have enjoyed the story so far and used the text as a way to explore refuge from the perspective of a refugee.  To explore this further, and the lives of others in other cultures, we made some Syrian pitta breads and dip.  We are so proud of how well the children did in cookery and that everyone tasted the food.
