2Sequoia Learning Update

Central idea: Human behaviour can affect the survival of our planet

We have had such a busy and happy week at school! Children were very eager to write a recount of their wonderful trip to Hastings Aquarium and we have also enjoyed a super week of investigating data and drawing block graphs to show how we travel to school, our hair colour and our favourite sandwich filling.  Children have also chosen their own theme to investigate and ask questions for.

Sports day was very exciting for everyone involved and we learnt a lot about winning, losing, doing our best and simply having a go and having fun!  Children were delighted to join their families and friends for our summer fair - a special time of being together as a school community.

We have learned a new skill of creating an endangered animal sculpture using an armature for modroc; a complex procedure which has needed a great deal of patience.  We have started to paint our creations - I think you will agree that they are indeed looking rather marvellous!  Can you spot any polar bears, rhinos, tigers or blue whales?

We have also been fortunate to have a composing workshop with Claire from Kidenza Children's Orchestra.  Children learned to create a crescendo and composed (and performed) a whole class musical piece to tell a story about the day dad fell into the pond!

This week and next week, we will also be learning about happy healthy relationships, starting with the story, 'Grandfather and I' by Helen E Buckley.  Children will consider who is special to them  and how they care for each other.  This will then be followed by the concept of the human lifecycle and how we grow and change as we get older.  This will include age appropriate, scientific terminology to teach children about the different parts of their body.  This important area of our curriculum will then be built on in KS2 when children begin to learn about puberty and the changes when growing from children to adults.
