What if my child does not have reading material for sustained silent reading?

Students with Town of Mansfield Library Cards can access e-books through the Libby App. Here are the instructions:

Get started with Libby

STEP 1

Install the Libby app from your device's app store.

Or, visit libbyapp.com in your Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge browser.

STEP 2

In Libby, follow the prompts to find your library and sign in with a valid library card (e.g. your SAILS library card).

STEP 3

Browse your library's collection and borrow a title.

STEP 4

Borrowed titles appear under Shelf > Loans and download to the app automatically when you're connected to Wi-Fi, so you can read them when you're offline.

From your Loans, you can:

  • Tap Read With... to choose where you'd like to read the book (Kindle or Libby), then finish sending to Kindle (U.S. libraries only) or start reading in Libby.

  • Tap Open Audiobook or Open Magazine to start reading or listening to that title.

  • Tap Manage Loan to see options like Renew and Return.

Digital magazines often provide great opportunities for students to interact with nonfiction text. E-books are also a great opportunity to easily access text. Additionally, here are some free resources:

What can my child do for “physical activity?”

  1. Try a Tabata workout. A Tabata workout is one that consists of 20 seconds of high-intensity activity, followed by 10 seconds of rest on-and-off for eight rounds. Here is a Fortnite Tabata to try out.

  1. Create your own Tabata using the. Physical Activity Chart. (link)

Be sure to write it down so you don’t forget. Once you’ve created it, do it! If you’re up for a challenge complete your Tabata three times.

What if my child does not remember their school email username and/or password?

Please email the Assistant Principal for your child’s team and they can send you their username and/ or password. Email Mr. Hoffman (kevin.hoffman@mansfieldschools.com) if your child is on the Orange, Blue, Gold, Silver, or White teams. Email Ms. Cotillo (mary.cotillo@mansfieldschools.com) if your child is on the Yellow, Purple, Aqua, or Green teams.

When should I expect emailed activities from teachers?

All activities are being emailed to students only using their school issued Gmail account. On Monday, students will receive three emails: one from their Social Studies teacher and one from each special they were scheduled to take during trimester three. Tuesday through Friday they will receive one from the core content area teacher of the day.

Does my child have to log on immediately at 8:30 am?

No! The work and activities being provided are mostly asynchronous (meaning they are not “live events.” Students can do them on their own schedule). We know that families need to be flexible with their schedules, balancing the workloads of parents, guardians, and siblings. Some students can get started first thing in the morning while others may get started in the late afternoon.

What if my child does not receive an email at 8:30 am?

We are getting a lot of different systems off the ground all at once. Glitches may happen. If your child does not receive the expected email by 8:50 am, they should email that teacher and they can resend it. See the link below for the faculty email directory:

What if the assigned work takes more or less time than anticipated?

All human beings work at different paces. Teachers are using their professional judgement to come up with activities that will take most students two hours. Activities that take some students two hours may take someone else one and others four. If you feel things are taking too long, you may stop your child and have them email their teacher to let them know how far they got. If things go too quickly, additional resources can be found using the link below:

What if my child has a question?

Your child should email their teacher. Teachers will regularly check their email; however, please do not expect an immediate response.

What if my child wants to work on multiple subjects each day?

As we get started, students (in coordination with parents or guardians) may elect to create a new daily agenda that spreads out work from each content area if they so choose.

Does my child have to do this work?

Yes! As Governor Baker said, this is not a vacation. We will be reaching out to the parents and guardians of those students who are not engaging with this material.
