Chemical Energy = Potential energy stored in chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together. Chemical energy is stored in the foods you eat. 🍕🍌🥑
It is stored in gasoline. Take a look at other examples below:
Elastic Potential Energy is energy that can be stored in a bow, an inflated balloon or in a stretched rubber band. 🏹 🎈
Elastic energy is associated with objects that can be stretched or compressed.
Consider earthquakes! Plates often push against one another and store elastic potential energy. Once plates release this energy, the result is an earthquake.
Electrical Energy: the energy of moving electric charges. Because electrical energy moves, it is classified as kinetic energy. ⚡⚡⚡
Electromagnetic Energy is complicated. It includes the energy of light as well as other forms of radiation. 🌞🔦💡⚡🕯🚦
In physics, Electromagnetic Energy refers to the waves of the electromagnetic field, propagating through space.
This type of energy includes light, radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays (That created the Hulk, you know). Because this form of energy moves, it is classified as kinetic energy.
Energy is defined as the ability to do work or cause change. In other words, if you apply a force over a distance you are doing work. You are using energy. Work = Force X Distance. Energy and work are synonymous and both are measured in Joules.
There are many forms of energy and they can be classified as either potential or kinetic.
Potential energy forms include chemical, gravitational, mechanical, and nuclear.
Kinetic energy is energy of motion. Kinetic energy includes electrical energy, heat, light, and sound.
Gravitational Potential Energy is energy that is stored in a mass high above the ground. This is energy that depends on height and gravity. 🎢
The equation for calculating gravitational potential energy is mass * height * acceleration due to gravity. This means that larger masses that are higher above the ground will store more gravitational potential energy. As a roller coaster climbs the lift hill, it stores gravitational potential energy that will be converted into kinetic energy as it falls down the hill.
Kinetic Energy: The energy of motion. Kinetic energy is the energy of moving masses, electrons, atoms, molecules, compounds, and waves. Kinetic energy includes electrical energy, heat, light, and sound. Anything that moves shows or has kinetic energy.
Mechanical energy is a combination of Kinetic and Gravitational Potential Energy.
It is energy associated with the motion or position of an object (GPE and KE). Below you can see that the total mechanical energy remains constant as the gravitational potential energy transforms into kinetic energy and back. This assumes that energy is not transformed to sound or heat.
In this system, energy is not transformed to heat or sound. The total mechanical energy remains constant.
In this system, the total mechanical energy remains constant until the skier is slowed down by the snow. The snow does work on the skier and slows him down.
Nuclear Energy is a form of potential energy.
Nuclear energy is potential energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom. ⚛
This energy is released when nuclei are combined (as they are in the sun) as when they are split as they are in nuclear power plants.
Fusion occurs in our sun when it fuses hydrogen atoms together and makes helium. When this occurs, a little bit of mass is converted to enormous amounts of energy according to Einstein's famous equation: E = MC^2. Heat and light from the sun travel to our planet.
Potential energy = energy that is stored and held in readiness. Think of a stretched rubber band or spring. Think of a tree branch that falls and dents a car. Think of food. All of these examples store energy that can be used or shown at a later time. Potential energy forms include chemical, gravitational, mechanical, and nuclear.
Sound Energy = Sound travels to your ears via sound waves that are carried by air. 🔊 That energy pushes against your eardrum and your brain interprets the signals.
Because this form of energy moves, it is classified as kinetic energy. You couldn't hear in space because there is no air or substance to carry sound waves. From the movie Alien, "Noone in space can hear you scream."
Thermal Energy = the total energy (KE and PE) of the particles INSIDE a substance or material.
Work = Force x Distance. Work measures energy. Work is energy.
The animation on the left shows a man doing work. This is because he applies of force over a distance.
The man in the right is not doing work on the box because the box doesn't move.
