DEFINITION:
As mentioned in Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is "a philosophy that asserts the primacy of the spiritual and transcendental over the material and empirical" (“Transcendentalism”).
This movement emerged in the 19th century in New England.
The best known transcendental authors are Walt Whitman and his work Leaves of Grass or Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson ("Transcendentalism").
