DEFINITION:
Metaphor is defined in Literary Devices as 'a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two non-similar things'. People usually use this form of expression in speech, rather than formal writing. It is mainly used to satirize and joke about two things that may seem or be similar. Metaphors are also used symbolically in literature, to convey a hidden meaning to the reader. This way, the author evokes curiosity and imagination strokes to the reader.
Examples of metaphors used to satirize:
4. "The elephant in the room"
Metaphors in Literature:
Metaphors are very frequently used in literature. From ancient times, authors used to use a variety of symbolism and metaphors, to express an idea throughout a hidden meaning. The reader may not be able to spot the meaning immediately, but with proper examination, one can find it. Some examples of metaphors in literature are found in the work of 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight', especially in the part of the text where the author mentions "All the blood of his body burned in his face". This is used to show embarassment and shyness, rather than to say that the blood itself run through his face.
