Pun (paronomasia) is a humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest different meanings or applications, or a play on words.
There are many types of puns.
Homophonic puns - words that sound the same but have different meanings. Example: Tale /teɪl/ and Tail /teɪl/
Compound pun - a sentence that contains more than one pun. It can be a mixture of Homophonic and Homographic puns. Example: Don't scam in the jungle; cheetahs are always spotted.
Homographic pun - plays on words that are spelled the same way but have a double meaning. Example: Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana.
Visual pun - Can be achieved through imagery, graphics, or logos.
Recursive pun - consist of two parts. For a recursive pun to function properly, someone must understand the first part of the pun for the second part to make sense. Example: Steve: "I'm hungry." Mike: "Hi hungry, I'm Mike."
