DEFINITION:Genre is defined in Encyclopaedia Britannica as 'a distinctive type or category of literary composition, such as epic, tragedy, comedy, novel and short story. It can also refer to music and fiction subtypes. Genre categorizes a piece of work, so that one can easily understand the difference and spot some characteristics of it , compared to other pieces . There are more than 5 genres for each music or literary piece of work. It is usually seen in academia, in literature tests, where the teacher asks 'What Genre is it'? For instance, the tale of 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' , belongs to the literary genre of romance. This distinguishes the piece of work from a comedy, where the main idea is to use jokes and make the reader laugh. Genre can be subsidised into four main categories. Poetry, fiction, prose and drama. As the years go by, more and more genres have started to develop.The most common Genre in literature:- Fiction - this genre deals with unrealistic stories, often including monsters and imaginary world
- Poetry- poems focus on conveying ideas- and have stanzas and rhythm
- Drama- this genre mainly deals with conflict and exaggeration - deep emotions
- Romance- mainly deals with ideals of love and values
- Horror - mainly deals with scary stories, haunted houses and monsters- evoking emotions of fear to the readers
