Prototype 3 is an image of an already established planter on the Grand Valley's Pew campus located near the Richard M. Devos Center. We propose that planters in that area that already contain flowers be re-purposed with vegetable plants to provide produce for the local community. The image on the left is of the original planters located on the downtown campus. In the middle, is an image of planter instead filled with purple kale, globe artichokes, and peppers. These vegetables were chosen because they have an attractive look to them, which makes them a more visibly appealing plant choice in an area with heavy foot traffic. These planters are already assigned for upkeep by facility employees. This prototype would allow for students and volunteers to help manage the planters, allowing for an easier transition to occur with the new plants. The image on the right is another example of the planter with cabbage, lettuce, and herbs. These are extremely common plants that community members can easy use to make healthy meals with on a daily basis. They are also easy to grow and relatively fast-growing, so they can be harvested again in a short amount of time.
