In this Intro to Environmental and Sustainability Studies class, students used iTree applications to identify beneficial locations for tree plantings at three area public schools and on the GVSU campus. Our community partner for this project, the Lower Grand Organization of Watersheds (LGROW), recently received a grant from the US Forest Service for a Grand River Green Schools initiative, which will install green infrastructure on West Michigan school campuses to help slow and filter stormwater runoff. The iTree apps allow students to estimate the value of the ecosystem services provided by various tree species depending on the location in which they are planted. This collection of tree planting plans will help LGROW determine how to maximize stormwater interception and infiltration at each site.
