Thomas Nozal - I am a senior at GVSU majoring in Human Resources Management with an Environmental Studies minor. I decided to work on this project because it was a great opportunity to learn more about community beach cleanup events and understanding issues they encounter.

Jake Golding - I am a junior at GV and is majoring in Natural Resources Management with an emphasis on geospatial analysis and is minoring in Environmental Sustainability Studies. I chose this project because I love being involved in the community and this topic poses a great opportunity to be both involved in the community, as well as perform environmental service.

Madeleine Dunckley - Madeleine is a junior at GV and is majoring in Geology while minoring in Environmental Sustainability Studies. I chose this project because water pollution is something I feel very strongly about, and I know how bad it can be for the environment (short and long term).

The people of West Michigan need a better organizational structure to improve participation and retention rate of beach clean-up events
Create a culture around beach clean-ups to promote environmental sustainability
Create a sense of accountability for the participants
Create an engaging and fun atmosphere to increase the retention rate of participants
These are people that have some sort of interest, influence, or involvement over the course of the project. Visit our presentation link to hear more about the differing categories!
This is a visual representation of our problem. It takes a "cause-and-effect" approach to understanding all the various sources of issues that may arise.
The event itself is well planned and the organizational structure as it is, is well established. It was our goal to increase the organization that goes into this event to enable easier communication between particpants and organizers, as well as establish a sense of responsibility in community members to take care of their environment during this event, and year-round as well.
Although the spread of COVID-19 is creating many issues that were not planned for, it is our hope that the Muskegon Lake annual spring clean-up event will be renamed to the annual *summer* clean-up, due to the rescheduling of the event. If you are interested in participating with us, shoot us an email with some of your contact information and we will be in touch shortly!
