Write down any boating experience you have had
Kayaking is generally differentiated from Canoeing by the sitting position of the paddler and the number of blades on the paddle:
A kayak is defined as a boat where the paddler faces forward, legs in front, using a double bladed paddle.
A canoe is defined as a boat where the paddler faces forward and sits or kneels in the boat, using a single bladed paddle.
THINK/PAIR/SHARE: On slide 5, write down your kayaking experiences.
Contemporary kayaks trace their origin to the native boats of Alaska, northern Canada and southwest Greenland.
Inuit hunters developed a fast sea going craft to hunt seals and walrus.
Earliest models were constructed from a light wooden frame, tied together and covered with sea lion or seal hides.
Archaeologists have found evidence indicating that kayaks are at least 4000 years old.
Fibreglass boats were first introduced in the 1950’s with plastic first appearing in 1984.
