Outdoor Education…Character development through the outdoors
Outdoor Education focuses on developing your personal characteristics THROUGH the use of outdoor pursuits. You will have the opportunity to continue to discover who you really are and what you are capable of in an environment that is free from the issues you may deal with in your daily life. You will develop the necessary skills to perform at your best IN a range of outdoor pursuits. While being in the outdoors you will also develop a love of nature and learn ABOUT how to protect and care for it.
Outdoor Education - learning through, in and about the outdoors
This course involves both theory and practical lessons. The lessons will be a combination of classroom based theory and activities based in an outdoor environment.
Personal Responsibility through Skateboarding & Surfing
Positivity through Whitewater Kayaking
Perseverance through Mountain Biking
Social Responsibility through Rock Climbing
Bushcraft through Rogaine and Camp
During the course of the year there will be offsite trips that will supplement school-based learning.
Each topic will include opportunities to demonstrate key personal characteristics, outdoor pursuit related skills and knowledge. You will then receive feedback on your demonstration of 'Transferable Skills', 'Outdoor Pursuit Knowledge', 'Outdoor Pursuit Skills' and 'Self Management'.
You are to bring your device to all theory lessons. This will allow individual access to the Year 10 Outdoor Education website, Google Classroom resources and other websites. Classroom lessons will be a combination of ten minutes silent reading, knowledge retrieval, class discussions, activities and written tasks.
You are to wear the ‘MAGS’ Physical Education t-shirt and shorts for non-pool related practical lessons. We allow no school uniform to be worn during practical lessons. This includes school socks, shorts, shirt, jerseys and jackets. If you are sick or injured, you must still bring gear and have a note of explanation. You still bring a change of clothes to wear so that you are still part of the lesson and are involved.
When in the pool please wear one piece togs or beach/board shorts. Loose fitting t-shirts are not suitable as they increase drag and limit your movement. String bikinis are not suitable. If this is your only option, you need to wear a tight rash shirt over the top. Sports bras with wide straps and Nike Pro are considered suitable for the POOL ONLY. If in doubt, please check. We want everyone to feel comfortable in active lessons.
