Outdoor Education…Character development through the outdoors
TASK: Write down your two most common excuses that you know you often give?
Accountability is when an individual or department experiences consequences for their performance or actions. It is essential for an organization and for a society. Without accountability, it is difficult to get people to assume ownership of their own actions because they believe they will not face any consequences.
Motivation is a driving factor for actions, willingness and goals. It is derived from the word motive, or a need that requires satisfaction. Some people are motivated by pride while others are motivated by their ego.
Pride motivation is about testing yourself and pushing yourself. People who are motivated by pride do things for reasons that are internal not external - they want to impress themselves, not other people. Pride motivated people naturally hold themselves accountable.
Ego motivation is about getting excessive admiration or praise from others. Ego motivated people need others to hold them accountable.
A healthy balance is 85% Pride / 15% Ego
THINK/WRITE: When you last gave each excuse you listed earlier, were you motivated to complete a task through the use of pride or ego? When are you more accountable?
Homework challenge: Improve everyone's life at your home by helping out more with the chores that need to be done. Don't wait to be asked (Ego motivation), instead use your initiative (Pride motivation).
