One of the most common ways of giving a command in Māori is to add on to the verb a 'passive ending'. There are multiple uses of passive endings, but for now, we are just looking at how passive endings can be used to create commands.

Kia tere te oma! / Run quickly!
Kia kaha te mahi! / Work hard!
Kia tika tā koutou kōrero! / You must speak correctly!
Notes: If the action, as well as the way it should be done, is stated, then it is preceded by 'te' or a possessive such as 'tō'.
