'I te.......' - Saying something was happening
E.g. I te kaukau rāua ki te toka / They were swimming to the rock
I te whutupaoro ahau inapō / I was at the football last night
- Follow this link, and read through the notes on how to use 'i te...' to say that something was happening (always past tense).
- Copy the notes into your book, including the examples.
- Complete the translation activity below the notes. Once you have correct answers for each question (the box the each question is in will go green when your answer is correct), copy 3 of the examples from the activity into your book.
- Follow this link, and watch the video on how to use 'i te....' As you watch the video, pause it and copy at least 3 of the examples (the Māori & English) into your book.
- Using the context of a normal school day, write 6 x 'i te...' sentences of your won in your book. E.g. 'i te hīkoi ngā tauita ki te akomanga' - the students were walking to the classroom.
- In groups of 3 or 4, take turns at reading aloud one of the 'i te...' sentences you wrote for the last task. The other members of your group must try to translate your sentence into English in their books. The first person to translate it properly, gets a point (you must check each persons translation). At the end of the activity, you should all have shared each of your 6 sentences. Once finished, add your points to the chart on the whiteboard.
- Complete some language perfect revision tasks if you finish this mahi before the end of the lesson.
