Most colleges and universities require students to take an admissions test in order to be considered for admissions. The two main options are the ACT and the SAT. Traditionally, Sumner students take the ACT. We serve as an ACT test site twice each fall during the National Test Dates. We also have all 11th graders take the ACT during the school day each spring.
The SAT is another option for students. We do not offer the SAT at Sumner, but students can register and take the SAT at another site in the KC Metro area. Students who are being considered for National Merit Scholarship recognition are required to take the SAT. Some college and universities require students to take SAT subject tests. Please make sure you understand the testing requirements for your choice of schools.
Below you will find a chart that briefly compares the ACT and the SAT.
ACT
$55 Full test
$70 Full test + Writing
SAT
$49.50 Full test
$64.50 Full test + essay
If you qualify for free or reduced lunch you can qualify for a fee waiver. See Dr. DeVries or Ms. Ramirez in the Sumner Success Center to request one.
There was a time when colleges on the east or west coast of the US preferred the SAT and colleges in the midwest of the US preferred the ACT.
THIS IS NO LONGER TRUE!!!
Colleges, no matter the location in the US, will accept either test. There is no preference.
Many colleges and universities have adopted a test optional policy because of the COVID 19 pandemic. Please make sure you check your college website to see what their current policy for standardized test. Some, including the University of California System schools do not want a standardize test score.

Students have the option to take the ACT plus Writing or the SAT with Essay. It is really up to students which one they take. However, you should check to see the requirements at the colleges and universities you are considering. Some schools require students to do the plus Writing or Essay.
Money saving advice - students may choose to take the plus Writing or Essay test once. That way you have a score. Later it is fine to take the regular test (without plus Writing or Essay) while attempting to get a higher composite score.
