Level 1/2 National Certificate in Sports Studies

OVERVIEW

This course develops a student’s knowledge and understanding of sports-related activities. During the course a student will explore the contemporary issues in sport, the different ways of being involved in the sports industry, and the impact of sport on wider society. A key aspect of this course is looking specifically at the different leadership roles in sport and will encourage students to get involved as more than just a participant.

THE DETAILS

The course is broken down into 4 units as detailed below:

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN SPORT (R051)

This unit:

  • sets the context of sport within the wider environment and how it reflects society and its values;

  • allows the exploration of topical and contemporary issues in sport;

  • promotes values and ethical behaviour through sport

  • shows that sport has worth for society beyond providing entertainment.

DEVELOPING SPORTS SKILLS (R052)

This unit:

  • develops a student’s skills, techniques and tactical/strategical ideas;

  • improves a student's understanding of the rules and they will be able to apply these in an officiating role;

  • develops the important skills of communication; coping with performing under pressure; using initiative to solve problems and making decisions by considering the conditions around them.

SPORTS LEADERSHIP (R053)

  • Whether voluntary or professional, the role of the sport leader is imperative in any sport; adopting the role of coach, manager, teacher or team captain, sport leaders can shape the development of sport by influencing and inspiring those around them to participate and perform in sporting activities.

  • In this unit, learners will develop some of the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to be an effective sports leader and plan, deliver and review safe and effective sporting activity sessions themselves.

SPORT AND THE MEDIA (R054)

  • Sport uses the range of media to promote itself and in turn the media uses sport to expand and maintain uptake of its products.

  • In this unit, learners look at the differences in sports coverage across a range of media outlets; the impacts the media has on sport and how this has changed over the years.

  • Students will develop skills relevant to a range of careers and roles within the sports industry, such as sports reporting/broadcasting, sports analysis or research and public relations or media work within a sports organisation.

ASSESSMENT

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN SPORT (R051)

  • This unit is a 1 hour externally assessed written paper worth 60 marks.

  • The question paper consists of multiple-choice, short answer, and extended-response questions.

DEVELOPING SPORTS SKILLS (R052)

This unit is an internally assessed and externally set and moderated synoptic project worth 60 marks.

The centre assessment based on the specific sports studied during the unit.

SPORTS LEADERSHIP (R053)

This unit is an internally assessed and externally set and moderated synoptic project worth 60 marks.

SPORT AND THE MEDIA (R054)

This unit is an internally assessed and externally set and moderated synoptic project worth 60 marks.

WHERE CAN IT TAKE ME?

  • Students will develop a wide range of highly desirable, transferable skills such as communication, problem solving, team working and performing under pressure

  • Students will develop their own performance and how to effectively lead others as well as gain knowledge about the national sports context which is excellent preparation for roles such as sport development or sport leadership.

  • This is all good preparation for future study of P.E. at Level 3 as well as careers in:

  • Teaching

  • Sports science

  • Physiotherapy

  • Sports coaching

  • Personal training

  • Sports psychology

  • Sports journalism
