Celebrate Eid With a good book

On the 2nd May 2022, millions of Muslims all over the world celebrated Eid Al Fitr - including a number of our boys - to mark the end of Ramadan (the holy month of fasting). Eid is all about spending time with loved ones, eating hearty meals, honouring religious practices and showing appreciation for the blessings in life.

The library team therefore have decided to honour two contemporary Muslim authors and recognise the amazing contribution they have made to literature.

Sumbul Ali Karamali is an American author. She was raised in a Muslim family and studied at University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. She earned a degree in Islamic Law that informed the foundation of her book, The Muslim Next Door: the Quran, the Media, and that Veil Thing. This book is something of a beginners guide to Islam and Muslim culture. The book resists the Islamophobic presumptions made about Muslim communities in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on 9/11.

She has also written Growing Up Muslim: Understanding the Beliefs and Practices of Islam, which she states was published for the benefit of secondary school teachers struggling to find accurate material and references to teach their students about Islam.

Next, we have Willow Wilson who is again an American writer, author and journalist. However she is best known for being the first person to create a Muslim Marvel character - Kamala Khan A.K.A. Ms. Marvel! Her stories are full of relatable thought-provoking moments.

Even if you don't celebrate Eid, you'll learn a lot and if you do, you'll bask in that cosy, familiar feeling a holiday story can bring.

Eid Mubarak!
