Literacy Builds Success

Welcome to my weekly blog and I hope you and your families are well.

It has been a great week in school with so many things to report, non-least the superb start that Year 11 students have made to their mock exams.

Students have been focused, committed, determined and supporting each other throughout the week. If your son is in Year 11, please continue to encourage this positive behaviour and don't forget to turn his attention back to the helpful hint in my blog last week.

I would like to draw your attention to the wonderful work that continues in school that is associated with our Literacy programme. Mrs. Kang, Vice Principal has compiled the following half-term 2 round-up which is an absolute delight to read.

“Young People’s reading choices are influenced by their peers”

Hi Everyone,

It is wonderful to share with you all the initial green shoots of the supported reading provision in school.

It is just extraordinary to have over 75 mentors make their way down every Friday morning to read with their peers. The buzz in the air, the questioning and dialogue is just heart warming to watch.

It is also great to see student librarians in all year groups taking a lead and supporting library provision, checking out books for students and even coming back after school to support preparation for reading week. Just amazing!

Students taking real pride in the badges they have earned and understanding the importance of literacy. The smiles speak volumes.

The students listen attentively, use the literacy mats to ask appropriate questions and then set targets to encourage and extend their mentee.

The opportunity for students to deliver in assemblies is one that will develop character and confidence.

Thank you to all the Literacy Tutors that are supporting the students to grow in confidence in so many different ways, as we all know this is a life long skill.

It is great to see so many students take part in so many different music activities. With this they unlock a part of their brain that will support so many other skills and development.

Just awesome to see students gathered singing to their hearts content first thing in the morning. Great oracy development! Mrs Lowndes-Ford has the students under a spell, thank you for your commitment.

The Lexia provision is one that continues to build skills for not just our EAL and SEN students but our 100 students with the biggest gap between their RAGE vs CAGE. It is wonderful to see students top the leaderboard and exceed the targets set for them. Thank you Mrs Truman, Miss Russell, Miss Baker, Miss Choudhury, Miss Clarke and Mrs O'Shaughnessy for your drive every morning with these students. Every bit of support makes a difference. Just brilliant to see students beam and celebrate.

Students have usernames and passwords for Lexia and that they can contact their Literacy Tutor if they would like any information.

We take every opportunity to develop skills through student interactions as it is so powerful.

Thank you everyone for your hard work and commitment every day.

If any parents/carers would like to come into school and volunteer to support our Literacy Programme please get in touch as that is something we would appreciate and encourage.

Mrs Kang.
