Religion and Ethics

All students at Longhill High School learn about at least five of the major world religions, looking at important stories, beliefs and practices from different religions.

Term 1, students start with one of the oldest of these religions, Judaism, studying the Jewish stories of Abraham, the Creation, and the Exodus.

Term 2, they examine how Christianity emerged from Judaism, and will explore the life and teachings of Jesus.

Term 3, students look to the East to compare the beliefs and practices of Hinduism, learning about beliefs such as reincarnation and karma. In Ethics, students learn how to take part in classroom discussions and formal debates, and develop their writing skills in being able to develop arguments for and against. Some of the questions we will consider for debate in Year 7 include:

  • Does God exist?
  • Is there life after death?
  • Do we have the right to use animals for our own benefit?
