Grading Procedures / Renaissance Awards Program / Weighted Courses

Grading Procedures

Grades are A, B, C, D or F. Grades of CR (Credit) are used for students who meet bare minimum requirements for competency; NC (No Credit) are used for students who have not met course requirements. During the first week of class, each instructor will provide the students with a class expectation sheet indicating the grading procedures and rules for the class. Student preparation, class participation, examinations, homework, and attendance are all factors in grading.

Additionally, students receive Citizenship marks in each course reflecting their performance in that class as it relates to behavior expectations. See the chart below outlining the requirements for the respective Citizenship marks awarded.

RENAISSANCE AWARDS PROGRAM

The Renaissance Program has been established to recognize the students of Nipomo High School for their achievements in academics.

Titan, Cardinal, and Silver Cards

Students who qualify and apply will receive Renaissance cards at the beginning of each semester. Students who have achieved at least a 3.5 GPA, for the previous semester, will be awarded a Titan card. Students who earn between a 3.0-3.49 GPA will earn a Cardinal card (No NM, NC or F's allowed for Titan or Cardinal cards). Students qualify for the Silver card by improving their GPA by .5 from one semester to the next. Cards allow students to access rewards provided by Nipomo High School throughout the qualifying semester.

WEIGHTED COURSES

Advanced Placement (AP) classes are assigned extra honors points (weighted). Extra points will be awarded to students if they take advanced placement courses normally taken by students in the 11th and 12th grades. Courses taken at the college level no longer receive weighted grades.

SCHOOL LETTER FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD

Each student will receive an Academic Letter and Honor Scroll for the following:

  • Six semesters with an earned GPA of 3.0 and above.

  • Four semesters with an earned GPA of 3.5 and above.

  • A second honor scroll will be awarded for two additional semesters of an earned GPA of 3.5 or higher.
