Student Cars/Parking Permits
Driving to school/parking on campus are considered a privilege. Students who wish to drive to school must adhere to the following policies:
A vehicle permit application must be filled out and signed by a parent/guardian prior to purchasing a parking permit. Applications are available in the Activities Office. Students must possess and present a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance to be eligible for a parking permit. These documents must be presented at the time of purchase.
NHS has parking available specifically for student parking. Students may not park in areas designated for staff or visitors. Please refer to the NHS campus map in the August packet.
To be eligible for a parking permit, students must also have good attendance and citizenship, and no outstanding debts to NHS. Excessive tardiness and/or cuts are reasons to revoke a parking permit.
A $20.00 fee is required to obtain a permit for the school year and $15.00 if the student has an ASB Sticker. All monies will go to the ASB fund to defray the cost of issuing permits.
Students who park illegally or do not have a valid parking permit displayed from the rear-view mirror inside their vehicle are subject to being ticketed and/or towed.
Parking permits are the property of NHS and may be revoked at any time. Due to extenuating circumstances, revoked parking permits may be appealed to the principal or their designee.
Parking along streets adjacent to NHS is prohibited. No parking on Mallagh Street.
Lending, borrowing, forging or stealing a parking permit may result in the loss of parking privileges for the remainder of the school calendar year, with possible suspension and notification to law enforcement.
General Rules of the Parking Lots
Students may not sit in parked cars during school hours. Parking lots are off limits to students unless they are leaving campus after properly checking out.
Cars will not enter or leave the parking lots in a manner which endangers others. Reckless driving will result in loss of parking privileges.
Theft or damage to a parked car should be reported to the office and/or the NHS School Resource Officer. An accident report can be filed with the police when there is damage to a vehicle.
The school is not responsible for loss and/or damage to vehicles or their contents.
The principal/designee has the authority to conduct searches when reasonable grounds exist to suspect that a student has contraband in his/her possession/control or in violation of a rule, regulation or statute.
The following regulations apply:
Motor Vehicles - A motor vehicle search shall be defined as any inspection of a motor vehicle. The following regulations apply: 1) The decision to conduct a search of any vehicle on district property may be made by the principal or designee whenever the principal or designee has “reasonable suspicion” that the owner, operator, or other person having access to the vehicle has violated any rule, regulation, or statute; 2) The school official, at his/her discretion, may call upon a law enforcement officer to conduct the search; 3) Vehicle searches, whenever possible, shall be conducted in the presence of at least one adult witness.
