The purpose of the Week of Inspiration is to provide experiences where students will connect, engage and explore a variety of provocations to spark their curiosity about exhibition issues/opportunities. We want our students to take action in this world by connecting their skills/talents with their passion. This week, they will engage with photos, stories, videos, etc.
By the end of this week, students will be:
In our community and friendship circles we are very fortunate to connect with people who take action in order to make their dreams a reality. Those who continually strive to work hard on things that they are passionate about make great things happen in their lives. You can read about some of our inspirational guests below....
Ms. Aisia, Mr. Eponde and Mr. Pedro all have a passion for making music. They were curious about what a fusion of their musical styles might produce. After an incredible amount of hard work (although they don’t consider it work at all but pure joy) they were part of a music collaboration that recently produced the track “Love Matters”. Ms. Aisia and the guys joined Mr. Ian’s music class last week in order to share their passion with the Year 6 students. They also watched the video of the track, which incidentally currently sits in the top 50 of a number of European charts.
Gary Thornton is a primary school teacher and athlete from Ireland. In March, 2018 Gary used his spring break in order to engage his passion for running in a novel way. He ran 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 different continents. He achieved his goal and won all 7 races. Gary kindly conducted a Q&A session with the Year 6 students during which he addressed a wide range of questions. What shone through from our conversation with Gary was the need to be curious and find out what you are passionate about. After this, you need to be prepared to work hard and embrace mistakes because these help us to learn and achieve.
To start off our week, students rotated between each homeroom. In each room, they were introduced to the videos below. Each video has a specific focus. We encourage all members of our community to watch the videos shown below and to explore the various other media shared below under the headings of sparking curiosity, raising awareness, creative solutions, and follow your passion and purpose.
If you (teachers, mentors, parents, students) have any form of media you find inspiring, please fill out the form to the right. We would love to add to this page to reflect the community in which we learn. Thank you in advance!
On Thursday afternoon, students were given a movie ticket and the option of nine clips to watch. This allowed students to learn about various areas of interest to them and reflect on the various ATL (Approach to Learning) skills required in taking action. However, because of the time constraints, they were only able to watch 3 of 9. We've included all nine below for our entire community to watch and enjoy at their leisure.
Please take the time to discuss some of the content below with your kids.
Friday’s opening ceremonies wrapped up our week of inspiration, and kicked off our PYP exhibition for 2019! We were welcomed by Mr. Chris, sharing some inspiring thoughts about commitment and hard work. Some year 7 students were present to answer questions from students and parents about what to expect throughout the process of this year’s exhibition. We had the chance to listen to two wonderful pieces of music, one sung by 4.3 and 2.2, and one by LIS’s very own Ms. Aisia, Mr. Pedro, and Mr. Eponde. Thank you to parents who were able to attend.
If interested, feel free to engage in the following media as they relate to sparking curiosity within our students. As curiosity can lead and inspire us to take action, we must consider the means by which curiosity is ignited inside each of us.
A key component of the Exhibition process is empowering our students to take action relating to their inquiry. Sometimes, this action relates to raising awareness or accumulating information from individuals who have raised awareness on key issues. How will you approach your audience and effectively communicate your message?
The videos below range in topics. Think of the emotions you experience while watching them. Do you feel strong emotions? Do you feel empowered to act? Did you learn something new? Push your audience to take action through a strong grasp of knowledge and utilize your various skills to have your message clearly heard.
For every problem, there is a solution! Sometimes, we have to be extremely creative in how we approach problems both in the classroom and the greater world. Check out some 'creative solutions' which help inspire our students to take action.
Without passion or purpose, how will you succeed when the learning becomes tough? By choosing a topic which students are passionate about, or find purposeful, they will be able to continue their investigations from start to finish as it is mentally exhausting/draining at times.

Kerry was kind enough to share an inspirational video related to our theme of 'Creative Solutions.' Microsoft found a creative design solution to a problem that affects millions of disabled people. Now everyone can play!
