At Drew, all children are confident speakers, writers and readers of Spanish to enable them to communicate for practical purposes. Their learning sets the foundation for learning different languages in the future. They know and respect differences between our culture and the Spanish culture.

Why do we teach Spanish?
At Drew, we teach our children Spanish as we have identified that it is a widely spoken language across the world and have a large number of Spanish speakers within the United Kingdom.
We feel that this part of our curriculum allows children to be opened up to even more cultures beyond those pupils here at Drew and to build on their own curiosity and deepening their understanding to appreciate the world around them.
Following the Spanish curriculum will provide a strong foundation, developing an understanding of grammatical structures and language patterns as well as making links across languages, therefore equipping pupils for future language study, work and travel.
How do we teach Spanish?
Children in Years 1 - 6 have one 30 minute Spanish session a week which is taught by their class teacher.
Our curriculum is informed by the National Curriculum and enhanced by subject expertise held within Drew and the Learning in Harmony Trust.
Language Angels is used to support the teaching and learning of Spanish with their high quality resources.
Here are some of the key phrases that we’ve been learning…can you use them at home?
Mrs Kalantzi is our Spanish lead at Drew Primary School. If you have any questions about our Spanish curriculum and want to know more, please feel free to speak to her.
